Vattenfall applies to replace nuclear reactors in Sweden

Vattenfall has submitted an application to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) concerning replacement of one or two of Vattenfall’s existing reactors. The Swedish group aims to replace reactors by 2025 and estimates the entire authorisation process (involving the Swedish government and the Land and Environmental court) to 10-15 years.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has launched a project to draw up new regulations for the requirements that will be imposed on a new reactor. It is estimated that this work will be finished in late 2014 at the earliest. When the work on the regulations is finished, Vattenfall will need to supplement its application on the basis of the requirements imposed by these regulations. Then the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority can begin its work to review the application’s compliance with the requirements imposed on nuclear safety and radiation protection.
