Lithuania’s National Energy Regulatory Council (NERC) has relaunched its second offshore wind tender, seeking to develop a 700 MW offshore wind project off the country’s coast. The winning bidder is scheduled to be announced in May 2025.
Lithuania’s second offshore wind tender was originally launched at the beginning of 2024 but was discontinued in April after only one bid was submitted. NERC had announced that the auction would be rescheduled. At that time, the Lithuanian Government attributed the lack of interest to concerns about the geopolitical situation in the region, and to various challenges in the global market, such as high interest rates, disrupted supply chains post-pandemic, high equipment costs, and decreased financing interest from banks and funds.
Lithuania aims to establish two offshore wind parks totalling 1.4 GW to meet half of its current electricity needs, ensuring energy self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on imports. The country aims to source its electricity exclusively from local renewable energies by 2030.
