Denmark approves plan for Hesselø Offshore Wind project (0.8-1.2 GW)

The Danish Energy Agency (DAE) has adopted the development plan for the 800-1,200 MW Hesselø Offshore Wind project to be located in Hesselø Bay, in the Kattegat (Denmark). The offshore wind project will consist of wind turbines, cables and electricity-transforming plants that should be connected to the grid at Hovegård High Voltage Station. Additionally, the project considers the installation of submarine cables to Gilbjerg Hoved, the construction of a new high-voltage station at Pårup, and the expansion of the Hovegård High Voltage Station. The final capacity of the project will depend on the winner of the tender. The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2030 at the latest.

In April 2024, the Danish Energy Agency launched a tender for at least 6 GW of offshore wind capacity in four areas, namely North Sea I (at least 3 GW, split in three projects), Kattegat (at least 1 GW), Kriegers Flak II (at least 1 GW) and Hesselø (0.8-1.2 GW), to be completed in 2030. Denmark has currently 2.7 GW of offshore wind capacity (end of 2023), and the Thor offshore wind park will supply a further 1 GW when completed in 2027.
