The Uzbek Government has announced the start of construction work of a 500 MW solar PV power plant in the Besharyk district, in the Fergana region of eastern Uzbekistan. The US$350m project is being developed by the German company Hyper Partners in phases, with the first phase of 200 MW scheduled to be connected in the late 2024 and the remaining 300 MW in 2025. The solar project is expected to produce 1.6 TWh/year of solar power, saving approximately 466 mcm/year of natural gas. Two small hydropower plants also started construction works to supply remote areas, one of 2.2 MW in Shahimardan, and the other in the village of Yukori (430 kW).
Additionally, the government also announced a US$144m investment by China's Gezhouba Group in a 150 MW battery complex. The energy storage system is expected to be automatically activated during peak demand periods once it starts operations by the end of 2024.
