The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is planning to hold an oil and gas lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico (United States) on 10 December 2025, offering approximately 15,000 unleased blocks across the Gulf’s Western, Central, and Eastern planning areas. Leases awarded through Lease Sale 262 will be for oil and gas exploration and development only.
This sale marks the first of three lease auctions planned in the Gulf of Mexico under the 2024–2029 Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program. The Gulf of Mexico’s Outer Continental Shelf spans roughly 65 million hectares and is estimated to hold about 48 Gbl of undiscovered, recoverable oil and 3,990 bcm of natural gas.
According to BOEM, the Gulf of Mexico supplies 14% of domestically produced oil in the US.
