The National System Operator (NSO) of Sri Lanka has launched a tender for the development of 25 standalone BESS facilities rated 10 MW/40 MWh each, with a combined capacity of 250 MW/1,000 MWh in Sri Lanka, under a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) model. The BESS projects would be connected to the 33 kV power grid at 25 strategically located grid substations, including Ampra, Bolawatta, Galle, Kurunegala and Monaragala. Project developers may submit their bids until 13 August 2026 and winners will sign 15-year Energy Storage Agreements (ESAs).
BESS are expected to help stabilise Sri Lanka's power grid, reduce the use of fossil power plants, and accelerate the integration of solar and wind power.
