Ratch plans to invest US$1.3bn in 700 MW coal plant in Indonesia

Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding Plc (Ratch), the largest private power generator in Thailand, is negotiating with Banpu, a leading coal mining company in the ASEAN area, to invest Bht 40bn (nearly US$1.3bn) in the construction of a 700 MW coal-fired power plant in Indonesia. The power project is now undergoing a feasibility study.

It would add to Ratch's five-year investment plan, which earmarked total capital expenditures of Bht 120bn (US$3,850m) for the 2014-2018 period. The group plans to double its installed capacity, from 6.3 GW to 12 GW by 2020, and to have half of its total capacity in Thailand (73% currently) and half abroad. Its main geographical targets are Australia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam. Ratch is already cooperating with Banpu on the 1,878 MW Hongsa coal-fired power project in Laos, currently under construction and expected in late 2015-early 2016 (total cost of US$3.71bn). The group is seeking to increase its share on the Australian market through the acquisition of a 33.3% stake in state-owned Macquarie Generation (4,640 MW of coal-fired assets); in Japan, Ratch is leading a feasibility study for nine solar plants (200 MW).
