New Jersey (US) clears the way to develop nuclear power plants

The Governor of the US state of New Jersey has signed a law to create a pathway for new nuclear energy projects to address rising electricity demand (New Jersey governor press release, 13/07/2026). The Power NJ Act launches New Jersey’s procurement process for new nuclear projects that will be conducted by state’s Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) and the Economic Development Authority (NJEDA). The procurement lifts a 50-year moratorium on new nuclear development.

The bill has been passed by both houses of the legislature with bipartisan support, and it includes safeguards to ensure that the citizens will not bear the costs of project development and energy supply, such as the requirement to secure federal financing, to have at least two separate public comment periods, the realisation of independent assessments by the Division of Rate Counsel to ensure the ratepayer’s interest at every step of each project.

According to the announcement, nuclear provides 40% of New Jersey’s total energy, and represents 80% of the state’s clean energy supply.
