The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) (United States) has approved Georgia Power’s 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which includes an energy capacity expansion of over 5.5 GW and the addition of more than 1,600 km of new transmission development. According to the IRP, the Southern Company subsidiary plans to extend the lifetime of coal-fired units at Plants Bowen and Scherer until 2028 (4 GW), to add about 270 MW of new gas capacity by 2032 (McIntosh’s Units 10–11 and 1A–8A), the procurement of 1.1 GW of new utility-scale renewable capacity and an additional 2.9 GW to be acquired through customer subscription programs.
The plan also includes the addition of over 1.5 GW of new battery energy storage (BESS) projects, the addition of 54 MW to Vogtle’s nuclear power plant and the potential uprate of Units 1–2 at the Hatch nuclear power plant, although the project is still subject to approval by the relevant authorities. Additionally, the IRP expects transmission projects of about 1,600 km aimed to support load shifts across the state and enhance grid reliability.
