The European Parliament has voted to reinforce the EU aid programme for dismantling the 2,600 MWe (gross) Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania. It approved a contribution of €780m in the EU 2021-2027 budget - the European Commission proposed €552m - with the Lithuanian government contributing the rest. The complete dismantling of the two reactors is slated for completion in 2038.
The Ignalina facility is a two-unit RBMK-1500 nuclear power plant located in Visaginas (Lithuania). The country agreed to shut down Ignalina-1 and Ignalina-2 as a condition of its accession to the European Union. The two reactors were shut down in 2004 and 2009, respectively. In February 2018, Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) announced the removal of the last used fuel assembly from the Ignalina-2 reactor.
Initially estimated at €2.9bn in 2010, decommissioning costs soared to nearly €3.4bn in 2015. With an announced EU support of €1.55bn until 2020, Lithuania is facing a financing gap of nearly €1.6bn (2015 estimations).
