Andhra Pradesh (India) plans to deploy 3,000 MWh of new BESS capacity

The Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has announced its plans to install 3 GWh of new BESS capacity to strengthen grid reliability and support the integration of renewables (India Times, 13/04/2026). The government aims to launch the call for bidders soon, expecting to develop its plan in phases, with the installation of an initial capacity of 1 GWh projected by January 2027

The new BESS capacity will be required to store surplus solar energy generated during the day to be later released during peak evening demand, with the hopes to reduce thermal for grid reliability. The government estimates savings of about INR4-5bn (USD43-54m) for the state’s power distribution companies.
