Ameren Missouri, a subsidiary of the US utility Ameren Corporation, has announced it plans to invest US$1bn in order to add 700 MW of new wind capacity. Besides, the company intends to commission 100 MW of solar generation capacity over the next 10 years, with 50 MW expected to come online by 2025.
This move fits into the framework of a carbon reduction strategy. Ameren Missouri has set itself the goal of reducing its carbon emissions and is targeting a 35% carbon emissions reduction by 2030 and a 50% reduction by 2040 from the 2005 level. Since 2005, the subsidiary has significantly reduced emissions and reported a 26% emissions decrease in 2016.
Ameren Missouri’s generating capacity is approximately 10,200 MW, of which several coal-fired facilities such as the 2,372 MW Labadie, the 831 MW Meramec, the 1,180 MW Rush Island and the 970 MW Sioux power plants. The subsidiary has about 1,576 MW of gas-fired capacity and 680 MW of hydropower capacity.
