Alsons plans US$650m investment in renewables in the Philippines

Alsons Consolidated Resources, the renewable branch of Philippines group Alsons, has announced up to US$650m investments in hydropower and solar power projects in the Philippines in the next five years, as part of its strategy to diversify its power mix to renewable energies.

The company is currently building a 105 MW coal-fired unit for Sarangani Energy Corp. (SEC) that is expected to be commissioned by the end of March 2016; a second 105 MW unit is due for November 2018, while another 105 MW coal-fired unit for San Ramon Power should be completed by the second half of 2019.

Alsons has 97 MW of hydropower contracts for four rivers with the Department of Energy (DOE) and plans to start construction of the first 15-16 MW run-of-river power plant on the Siguil river in 2016. A 40 MW hydropower plant will be developed in Negros along Bago river, and two additional projects are expected in Mindanao, where a solar power plant should be built (in Gen. Santos City).
