The World Bank has approved a US$140m interest-free credit from the International Development Association (IDA) for the refurbishment of the Thaton gas turbine plant in Mon State in Myanmar. The loan will support the installation of a 106 MW CCGT power plant, which will replace ageing gas turbines with new units. The new CCGT unit will boost power generation (up to 250% more electricity with the same amount of gas) and reduce CO2 emissions. The plant will provide electricity to both the national and local grids, covering 5% of peak demand in Myanmar and 50% of peak demand in Mon State.
Currently, the electrification rate is among the lowest in Southeast Asia. In rural areas, only 16% of households have access to grid-based electricity. The World Bank supports Myanmar power sector reform and the development and implementation of its power master plan. The country needs to develop a diversified energy mix.
