The Australian state of Western Australia has opened its first Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) tender, seeking to procure 2 GWh of storage in the state. Projects must have a minimum size of 30 MW and a minimum storage duration of two hours.
The tender is part of the Australian Government’s plan to deliver an additional 23 GW of renewable generation capacity and 9 GW of storage capacity in the country by 2030. The CIS will involve regular competitive tenders held approximately every 12 months until 2027 in the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), and every six months until 2027 in the National Electricity Market (NEM). In Western Australia, the government will invite developers to supply a total of 6.5 TWh of electricity from new solar and wind projects (equivalent to over 2 GW of renewable capacity) and to build at least 1.1 GW/4.4 GWh of new electricity storage.
