Vietnam's 420 MW Dau Tieng solar PV project moves forward

China-based PV module supplier Jinko Solar has signed a 240 MW module supply agreement for the second phase of the 420 MW Dau Tieng solar plant (Dau-Tieng-2), which is located in Tay Ninh (southwest Vietnam). The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract was awarded to Powerchina Huadong.

Dau Tieng is being developed by Vietnam's Xuan Cau Company and Thailand's Grimm Power Public Company and includes two units, Dau-Tieng 1 (180 MW) and Dau-Tieng-2 (240 MW). The project will be built at a total cost of VND9,100bn (US$390m). The construction started in June 2018 and the two units are scheduled to become operational in 2018 and 2019, respectively. A third unit (Dau Tieng-3) is slated for deployment between 2021 and 2025.

Several solar power projects are under construction in Vietnam as part of the governmental feed-in-tariff (FiT) scheme, under which owners of solar PV-connected power plants are awarded a 20-year FiT at a rate of VND2,086/kWh (roughly US$9c/kWh). The produced power will be sold to Electricity Vietnam (EVN) over a 20-year period.
