The Australian state of Victoria has launched the country’s first offshore wind auction, opening the Request for Proposal (RFP) process for an initial offshore wind capacity of 2 GW in the Gippsland offshore wind zone in Australia (Victoria government press release, 26/08/2026).
Developers can now bid for contracts, with projects to be assessed on value for money, deliverability and benefits for local workers, businesses and communities. The auction is expected to provide enough electricity to power around 1.5 million homes annually. The RFP process is scheduled to remain open until August 2027, with contracts expected to be awarded in 2028. Successful projects are then expected to progress toward investment, construction and operation.
The contracts are expected to be integrated into the national Electricity Services Entry Mechanism, supporting Victoria’s long-term target of installing 2 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2032, 4 GW by 2035 and 9 GW by 2040 (Enerdata's Global Energy Research). The launch follows a feasibility licensing process under which 12 offshore wind projects secured licences in the Gippsland zone. The Gippsland zone, officially declared in 2022, is currently Australia's most advanced offshore wind development area.
