Uzbekistan announces tender for 200 MW wind project

Uzbekistan will launch an international tender to build a 200 MW wind power plant between the Beruniy and Korauzak districts of Karakalpakstan, in the north-west of the country. The wind tender, the second in the country, is supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Solar and wind currently account for less than 1% of the country’s installed capacity, with 4 MW and 1 MW, respectively. More than 380 MW of solar capacity and 1.2 GW of wind capacity are currently under construction, and 1.3 GW of solar and 4.1 GW of wind are under development. Uzbekistan aims to deploy 12 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 and has launched several tenders for energy projects since 2019.

In 2021, ACWA Power won a tender to build the 100 MW Karauzak wind project in north-western Uzbekistan; the project is expected to be commissioned in mid-2023. The Saudi group has also signed an implementation agreement with the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade and the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan to build a 1.5 GW wind project in Karakalpakstan and two power purchase and investment agreements for two wind power plants with a total capacity of 1,000 MW, the Bash project located in Bukhara and the Dzhankeldy project in Bukhara/Navoi, worth US$1.3bn.
