The US proposes a second offshore wind auction in the Gulf of Mexico

The US Department of the Interior (DOI) has proposed a second offshore wind energy auction in the Gulf of Mexico (United States). The proposed lease sale includes four areas offshore Louisiana and Texas, totalling 1,660 km2, with the potential to power 1.2 million homes. The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will be open to feedback on the proposed lease areas (size, orientation, location) and on potential lease revisions to include the production of hydrogen or other energy products using wind turbine generators on the lease. The public comment period will last for 60 days, ending in 20 May 2024, after which BOEM should publish a Final Sale Notice if it decides to proceed with the auction.

The United States currently has no large-scale offshore wind project currently operational (42 MW of offshore wind capacity at the end of 2022). The government aims to add 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
