The US proposes an offshore wind lease sale for 3 areas in the Gulf of Mexico

The US Department of the Interior (DOI) has proposed an offshore wind lease sale for three areas in the Gulf of Mexico off the US states of Texas and Louisiana, which have an estimated potential to power about 1.3 million US households. The proposed sale includes a 415 km2 area offshore Lake Charles, Louisiana, and two areas offshore Galveston, Texas, one also comprising about 415 km2 and the other 392 km2.

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Director will initiate a 60-day public comment period before the end of February 2023. If the DOI decides to proceed with the sale, BOEM will publish a Final Sale Notice at least 30 days ahead of the sale, which would announce the time and date of the lease sale and the companies qualified to participate in it.

At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2021).  The US administration has already held three offshore wind lease auctions since 2021, notably in the states of New York and California.
