US NRC approves FPL's licenses for two AP1000 nuclear reactor projects

The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the combined construction and operating licences (COLs) for two nuclear reactor projects rated 1,100 MW each proposed by Florida Power and Light (FPL) to be built at its Turkey Point nuclear power plant in Florida (United States). FPL still has to take a final decision on whether to move forward with building the two reactors or not.

FPL unveiled the projects for Turkey Point-6 and Turkey Point-7 in 2006 and submitted the COLs in June 2009. In 2011, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) approved FPL's decision to charge more on its customers' bills to fund the nuclear investment. In 2016, the NRC issued the final environmental impact statement for the two units.

Turkey Point already comprises two operating 800 MWe reactors built in the 1970s. Turkey-3 will be operating until July 2032 while Turkey-4 will be running until April 2033; they would be replaced by the two proposed units, which are scheduled for commissioning in 2031 and 2032, respectively.
