The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has issued auction details and lease terms for the development of up to 4.5 GW of offshore wind energy off the state of California.
The Proposed Sale Notice provides information about five potential areas that could be available for leasing in the Morro Bay and Humboldt wind energy areas (which consist of about 373,268 acres or 151,056 hectares). It will be published on 31 May 2022, opening a 60-day public comment period to seek feedback.
Up until now, BOEM has held 10 competitive lease sales and has issued 25 commercial offshore wind leases in the Atlantic Ocean. The California lease sale will be its first in the Pacific region.
This proposed sale is part of the leasing plan announced in 2021 by the US Secretary of Interior to meet the country’s goal to deploy 30 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.
