The US Department of Interior (DOI) has announced the proposal of an offshore wind lease sale in the Central Atlantic. The proposed lease sale includes one area offshore the States of Delaware and Maryland and another one off the State of Virginia, which together total about 1,125 km2 and are expected to have the potential to power over 2.2 million US households.
The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is currently seeking public comments on the lease areas, which could be offered during the course of 2024. In addition, four developers have already been deemed eligible for the lease sale, namely Avangrid Renewables, US Mainstream Offshore, OW North America Ventures, and energyRe Offshore Wind Holdings.
At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2021).
