The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed its environmental review of potential impacts from offshore wind energy leasing activities in the Humboldt Wind Energy Area (WEA), located 20 miles (32 km) offshore northern California (United States), and has issued a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) based on its analysis. BOEM’s Environmental Assessment (EA) considered potential impacts from the issuance of leases within the WEA that comprises nearly 132,369 acres (53,568 hectates) off the coast of Humboldt County, California, and that, if developed, could bring up to 1.6 GW of energy to the grid.
The United States, which intends to hold up to seven new offshore lease sales by 2025, aims to deploy 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
