The US Department of Interior (DOI) has announced that two areas will be auctioned by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for an offshore wind lease sale in the Central Atlantic with a potential capacity to generate up to 6.3 GW. The auction is expected to take place in August 2024, with Lease Area A-2 consisting of 41,000 ha located approximately 41 km from Delaware Bay (between Maryland and Delaware). Lease Area C-1 will cover 71,430 ha and will be located at about 65 km from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay (offshore Virginia). With the potential power of both lease areas, the BOEM expects a potential to power up to 2.2 million homes. Seventeen companies have qualified to bid.
At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035. At the end of 2023, the US only had 42 MW of offshore wind capacity.
