The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has launched a public consultation to prepare for its second Central Atlantic offshore wind auction. The consultation expects to receive public feedback on possible commercial wind energy development in a 54,538 km2 area off the coasts of the US states of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. Once the 60-day comment period is closed, BOEM will review and analyse commercial nominations and public comments submitted and identify draft wind energy areas to later propose a competitive lease sale after completing their respective environmental reviews and consultations.
BOEM recently announced the winners of its first Central Atlantic offshore wind energy auction, awarding a potential capacity of about 6 GW to Equinor (2 GW) and Dominion (2.1 GW- 4 GW). At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035. At the end of 2023, the US had 42 MW of offshore wind capacity.
