UK’s Crown Estate aims to add 4.7 GW at existing offshore wind leases

The UK’s Crown Estate has launched its Capacity Increase Programme to lease offshore wind areas with a potential capacity of up to 4.7 GW. The existing areas were originally seven fixed-bottom offshore wind power plants located in the coasts of England and Wales, with rights that were previously awarded rights through The Crown Estate’s Offshore Wind Leasing Round 3 or The Crown Estate’s 2017 Offshore Wind Extensions opportunity. The projects (Awel y Môr, Dudgeon Extension, Sheringham Shoal Extension, North Falls, Five Estuaries, Rampion 2, and Dogger Bank D) have existing grid connections and infrastructure and could ease the swift deployment of new projects with higher capacity once the existing seabed rights are amended. With the new, maximized capacity, the areas could generate enough energy to power up to four million homes.

The United Kingdom seeks to reach up to 50 GW of clean energy from offshore wind deployed by 2030. At the end of 2024, the country had an offshore wind capacity of over 16 GW.
