The United Kingdom (UK) Environment Agency and the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) have jointly launched the second phase of the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) for the UK-adapted version of the HPR1000 nuclear technology, proposed by China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) and EDF for the Bradwell nuclear project in Essex (UK). Under the framework of the second assessment phase, the regulators will review the safety, security and environmental aspects of the HPR1000 technology.
In October 2016, CGN and EDF submitted a joint application through their JV GNS General Nuclear System Ltd) to BEIS (Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy) to begin the GDA process. The reference design for the HPR1000 is CGN’s Fangchenggang-3 unit (China), which is currently under construction.
The Bradwell project is still in an early pre-planning stage. In addition, partners are also involved in the development of a third nuclear project, the Sizewell C project, which would be jointly developed by the two companies (80% EDF, 20% CGNPC).
