Forty energy, road and rail projects worth £33bn (€39bn) have passed the first hurdle in getting a government infrastructure guarantee in the United Kingdom and are now eligible for the UK Guarantee scheme.
Among the pre-qualified projects, the Helius Energy - Avonmouth biomass energy generation will be a 100 MW capacity facility in the South West expected to produce energy for the national grid, worth about £300m (€352m). Two Intergen gas-fired power generation projects at Spalding in Lincolnshire and Gateway Energy Centre in Essex, the latter being an investment of £600m (€704m), also were pre-qualified, as well as the Neart Na Gaoithe 450 MW wind park in the outer Forth Estuary, Scotland, and the Tilbury Green Power 60 MW waste wood fired power generation plant in Essex. The conversion of the coal-fired Eggborough power plant to biomass, a waste-to-energy center (Chinook Energy Plants) and a port to support the manufacture, assembly and installation of offshore renewable technologies on Humberside (Able Marine Energy park) were pre-qualified too. Islandmagee gas storage project in Northern Ireland, worth £400m (€468m), was named; it will be capable of storing up 2 month’s worth of Northern Ireland’s total gas requirement.
Of the £40bn (€47bn) of guarantees available, the government has already awarded a £75m (€88m) guarantee to the Drax power plant for the £700m (€819m) programme to partially convert the UK’s biggest coal power station to biomass. The power station will produce 7% of the UK’s electricity with the biomass conversions set to be up and running over the next three years.
