UK opens tender for at least 7 GW of new offshore wind

The UK has announced the launch of the Offshore Wind Leasing Round 4, with a potential to award at least 7 GW of new offshore wind capacity. The new projects will be built within four large bidding areas, namely Dogger Bank; Eastern Regions; South East; and Northern Wales and Irish Sea. These areas offer sites on water depths out to 60 metres, which are suitable for fixed foundation technology. Bidders will be encouraged to propose hybrid projects including interconnection and other energy sources. Awarded projects will be granted a 60-year lease (from 50-years in previous processes) and will have to be completed by 2030.

The tender will be held in three stages, which will commence in October 2019, and run until autumn 2020. Developers will be required to share data and participate in sector benchmarking schemes such as the System Performance and Reliability Trend Analysis project (SPARTA).
