The UK Government has allocated over 9,648 MW of renewable capacity in its sixth and latest renewables auction (AR6). The UK awarded 5,342 MW of offshore wind capacity (including 1,59 MW under permitted reduction and 400 MW of floating wind), 3,288 MW of solar PV above 5 MW, 990 MW of onshore wind and 28 MW of tidal stream.
In total, 131 renewable energy projects secured contracts for difference (CfD) from the British Government. Denmark’s Ørsted notably secured a CfD for a 1,080 MW portion of its 2,955 MW Hornsea 3 project (at a tariff of £54.23/MWh), and a 2,400 MW contract for Hornsea 4 (for £58.87/MWh). Spain’s Iberdrola was awarded 963 MW for its East Anglia 2 project (at £58.87/MWh) and a 159 MW portion of its 1.4 GW East Anglia 3 project (at £54.23/MWh). Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, a subsidiary of Italy’s Eni, were awarded 400 MW of their up to 560 MW Green Volt floating wind project.
The UK awarded significantly more capacity in this CfD round than in the previous. In 2023, the UK awarded only 3.7 GW of renewable capacity, including 1.9 GW of solar capacity and 1.5 GW of onshore wind. No offshore wind capacity was awarded in the previous round.
