UAE receives record low bid of US$1.69c/kWh for 900 MW solar project

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has received a record low bid of US$1.6953c/kWh (US$16.95/MWh) for the fifth phase (900 MW) of its Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar PV project. This is the lowest bid ever submitted in a solar tender worldwide. The name of the bidder has not been disclosed. The 900 MW phase will be developed under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model and is expected to be commissioned in stages as of the second quarter of 2021.

The Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park project is a giant solar PV and CSP project developed by DEWA. The first phase of 13 MW was commissioned in 2013 and the second phase of 200 MW followed in March 2017. The third phase of 800 MW is being commissioned in three stages: the first 200 MW stage was commissioned in 2018, the second 300 MW stage in 2019 and the third 300 MW stage is under construction and expected in 2020. The fourth phase of the Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will include 950 MW of solar PV and CSP (parabolic trough and solar tower), while the fifth phase will consist of 900 MW of solar PV capacity. The project capacity might be raised to 5,000 MW by 2030, making it the largest solar park in the world.

The project will contribute to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to generate 75% of Dubai’s total power from non-fossil energy by 2050. This target will require a capacity of 42 GW of clean and renewable energy by 2050.
