TVO's OL-3 nuclear reactor reaches testing stage (Finland)

Finnish power utility Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) has launched the hot functional testing phase at the long-delayed Olkiluoto-3 nuclear reactor project in Eurajoki (western Finland). The unit's systems are tested as a whole without the fuel and the temperature and pressure levels are gradually raised to the production operation levels. After their completion in a few months, TVO will be able to secure an operating license for the nuclear project and move forward towards the commissioning of the facility.

The 1,600 MW EPR reactor has been under construction since 2005 on the site of the existing Olkiluoto nuclear power plant and was expected to be commissioned in 2009. The reactor vessel was installed on the site of the EPR in October 2013. The project has been hit by repeated delays, court disputes and rising costs. The project is now expected to be connected to the grid in December 2018, for full operations in May 2019.
