TVA issues RFP for 5 GW of carbon-free power capacity by 2029 (US)

US utility Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for up to 5 GW of carbon-free power generating capacity, that is expected to be operational by 2029. The RFP is open to solar and wind, as well as nuclear technologies. The proposals have to be submitted by 19 October 2022 and the selected projects will be announced in the spring of 2023.

TVA is planning to bring online an additional 10 GW of solar capacity by 2035, as part of a plan to reduce its carbon emissions by 70% in 2030 (from 2005 levels), 80% in 2035 and achieve net-zero in 2050. In 2021, TVA announced a US$2bn investment by 2025 for new transmission infrastructure and launched additional exploration initiatives of technologies such as carbon capture, hydroelectric pumped storage and hydrogen.
