Turkish nuclear regulator clears construction of Akkuyu-2 reactor

The Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK) has issued a limited work permit to construct the second 1,200 MW unit of the 4,800 MW Akkuyu nuclear power plant after a thorough review and assessment of the package of the documents submitted by the Russian contractor Rosatom, including a preliminary safety analysis report and a probabilistic safety analysis of the plant. Rosatom may now apply for receiving a construction license and then proceed with the construction and installation works at facilities of the unit except for the ones related to the nuclear island.

The Akkuyu plant will consist of four reactors - 1,200 MW VVER units - for a total capacity of 4,800 MW. The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) issued a 49-year licence for the project in 2017. Rosatom started the construction of the first unit at the end of 2017 and obtained the license for the nuclear island in the first half of 2018.
