Tunisia has raised its renewable energy share target in power generation from 30% to 35% by 2030. The country plans to invest TND900m/year (US$294m/year) to boost renewable energy projects and reach this objective. The country plans to develop more than 4 GW of additional renewable capacity by 2030, i.e., an annual capacity of at least 500 MW/year over a period of 8 years.
Subsequently, Tunisia will launch 3 international tenders to build 2 GW of renewable power capacity, for an investment of TND5bn (US$1.6bn). The tenders will be for several 100 MW solar PV projects, two 75 MW wind projects, and 600 MW of other unspecified projects. In March 2022, the country already granted licenses to three international companies to develop 500 MW of electricity from renewables.
By seeking renewable capacities, Tunisia is trying to cut its dependency on gas (86% of its installed capacity and 95% of power generation in 2020). Renewables represented 13% of installed capacity and 5% of power generation in 2020.
