Tunisia launches tender for 1.7 GW of renewables

The Tunisian Ministry of Energy has initiated a tender offering projects to produce 1,700 MW of renewable power over the 2023-2025 period. The tender includes eight 100 MW solar projects, eight 75 MW wind projects and two solar projects in Hecha and Khobna with unspecified capacity. The projects will require a total investment of TND5bn (US$1.6bn).

In June 2022, the country raised its target for renewables from 30 to 35% of power generation. To reach this objective, Tunisia intends to spend TND900m/year (US$300m) to develop more than 4 GW of new renewables capacity by 2030 (i.e. around 500 MW/year over a period of 8 years).

In 2020, renewables accounted for less than 4% of Tunisia’s power generation and 7% of its capacity mix. Gas accounted for 95% of the country’s electricity production and 86% of its installed capacity.
