The US Department of the Interior (DoI) has awarded two offshore wind leases to TotalEnergies and Duke Energy in the Carolina Long Bay area offshore North Carolina and South Carolina (United States), generating US$315 in winning bids. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) lease sale offered two lease areas covering 110,091 acres (44,552 hectares), which could result in about 1.3 GW of offshore wind energy. The two lease areas include similar acreage, distance to shore, and wind resource potential. The Carolina Long Bay offshore wind energy auction allowed companies to bid on one or both of the lease areas within the Wilmington East Wind Energy Area.
The United States, which intends to hold up to seven new offshore lease sales by 2025, aims to deploy 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
