TotalEnergies and RWE submit a joint bid for up to 1.6 GW of wind in France

The French energy group TotalEnergies and the German utility RWE have partnered to submit a joint bid in France’s Centre Manche 2 (AO8) tender for an up to 1.6 GW offshore wind site off the Normandy Region (north-western France).

The AO8 project, able to host an installed capacity of between 1.4 GW and 1.6 GW, is located near the 1.05 GW AO4 project area (Center Manche 1), about 40 km off the Cotentin peninsula. TotalEnergies and RWE are also one of the six companies and consortia that have been selected as potential developers of the Centre Manche 1 wind park. The consortium announced that if it prequalifies for the AO8 tender, it will pursue the dialogue with local and regional stakeholders established during the AO4 tender to involve them in all stages of the AO8 project.

Between October and December 2022, the French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) held a competitive dialogue for the Centre Manche 2 offshore wind project, as well as for the 900 MW to 1,050 MW Sud-Atlantique offshore wind plant off the Isle of Oléron (western France).

France targets 40 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050. The country intends to award 2 GW of projects each year from 2024. The 480 MW Saint-Nazaire offshore wind park, located off the coast of the Guérande peninsula in Loire-Atlantique, western France, which is the country’s first commercial-scale offshore wind project, was commissioned in September 2022.
