TotalEnergies and partners start building 1 GW wind+BESS project in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan's state-owned power producer Samruk Energo, national oil and gas company KazMunayGas, and TotalEnergies have officially started building the 1 GW Mirny wind project in the Zhambyl region (southern Kazakhstan) (Kazinform, 18/03/2026). The USD1.2bn project will include a 600 MWh BESS and is expected to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2028.

The Mirny project is one of the three 1 GW wind+storage projects to be developed by international partners in Kazakhstan, under agreements signed in 2023 on the sidelines of COP28. The two other projects are developed by ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia) in the Zhetysu region (USD1.5bn project) and by Masdar (United Arab Emirates) in the Zhambyl region.
