Toshiba abandons its ABWR nuclear project in Texas (US)

The Japanese conglomerate Toshiba has withdrawn from the advanced boiling water reactors (ABWRs) South Texas project (STP) in Texas (United States) as it failed to find any investors and viewed its development as no longer economically viable. The withdrawal is expected to be completed by the end of 2018 and fits into the framework of Toshiba's new strategy, which will focus on the elimination of risk from overseas nuclear business.

Toshiba was expected to supply the third and fourth reactors of the South Texas nuclear project (1,350 MW each) through its wholly-owned subsidiary Toshiba America Nuclear Energy Corporation (TANE). The US utility NRG Energy already operates the first two units (two pressurised water reactors or PWRs) on the STP site and Toshiba submitted a construction and operating licence (COL) for the two ABWRs to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2007. Toshiba later signed the engineering and procurement contract (EPC) in 2009 but NRG Energy pulled out from the project in 2011.
