TenneT will connect Hollandse Kust (Zuid) wind park to the Dutch grid

Swedish power company Vattenfall has signed an agreement with the Dutch power transmission system operator TenneT for the offshore grid connection of the 1,400 MW Hollandse Kust Zuid 1 and 2 projects off the South Holland coast. The agreement entails the connection between the two 700 MW wind parks and TenneT's Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha offshore platform.

According to TenneT, the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore grid will comprise two 700 MW offshore transformer platforms two 220 kV AC cables per platform, an onshore substation and an expansion of the existing Maasvlakte high voltage (HV) substation that currently links to TenneT’s Randstad 380 kV Zuidring. The first link is expected to become operational in 2021 and the second one in 2022.

The Hollandse Kust Zuid wind parks won the first subsidy-free public tender issued by the Dutch government in March 2018; they will sell the power generated directly on the wholesale market. Offshore wind costs have been falling significantly in recent years, as manufacturers bring ever larger turbines to the market. This ternd pushed the government to propose subsidy-free tenders and to increase significantly its offshore wind power capacity forecasts: approximately 7,000 MW are expected to be added between 2024 and 2030.
