Tender draws bids for 8 GW of wind, solar and storage in NSW (Australia)

The first round of renewable tenders in the state of New South Wales (southeastern Australia) has drawn more than 5.5 GW of wind and solar projects and over 2.5 GW of long-duration energy storage projects. The proposed projects will be reviewed by the New South Wales Consumer Trustee and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the winners will then be awarded long-term energy service agreements. The projects are expected to be able to power about 2.4 million Australian households.

The tender was launched in October 2022 as part of New South Wales’ efforts to modernise its electricity infrastructure system ahead of the planned closure of four out of five coal-fired power plants. In October 2022, New South Wales launched a renewable energy policy linked to the creation of five Renewable Energy Zones across the Australian state. New South Wales set an objective to build 12 GW of renewable energy and 2 GW of long-duration storage by 2030.
