Tanzania invites companies to build new wind and solar power projects

The Tanzanian government and the state-held power firm Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) are seeking international investors for the construction of wind and solar power plants as part of its project to diversify the domestic power generation mix. The wind parks are expected to have a minimum capacity of 50 MW each for a combined power generation capacity of 200 MW, while the solar photovoltaic (PV) projects will have a minimum capacity of 20 MW each, for a combined capacity of 150 MW.

The projects will be located in several locations around the country, in particular in the Dodoma, Singida, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Simiyu, Njombe and Iringa regions. They will be developed under a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) scheme. Once built (within the next two years), they will help Tanzania to meet the growing power demand and will contribute to the governmental objective of increasing the domestic power generation capacity to 10,000 MW by 2025. Tanzania is already investing in wind, solar, hydro, coal, natural gas and geothermal power.
