Tanzanian state-run power generator Tanesco (Tanzania Electric Supply Company) has cleared the 1,000 MW Mbeya Coal to Power Project (MCPP), which is being developed by the South African company Kibo Energy in the Tanzanian city of Mbeya. Currently at the planning stage, the project can be developed for the export market and the produced electricity will be sent to Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya through power interconnections under the framework of the Eastern African Power Pool (EAPP) and the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).
Tanzania is currently considering developing a US$1.4bn power interconnection project with Kenya and Zambia. The interconnection project would enhance power trade, regional economic integration and security of power supply for the three countries, which would consist of 2 300 km of 400 kV power lines and 373 km of 330 kV power lines (each country being responsible for the lines in its territory).
