Taiwan tender awards 10 offshore wind projects (8.7 GW) to 6 developers

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has selected ten offshore wind projects, totalling 8.7 GW of potential capacity, in the first auction of the Round 3 Zonal Development Phase. Six developers were chosen to develop these ten projects.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners was awarded the 1.8 GW Fengmiao wind project, planned to be operational in 2027 and located off the city of Taichung. Synera Renewables, a Taiwanese energy group, was selected to develop the over 1.5 GW Formosa 4 wind project, also planned for 2027.

Skyborn Renewables Taiwan picked up three projects for 1.7 GW, namely the 700 MW Youde, the 700 MW Datian and 300 MW Haixia phase II wind projects. The first two projects are expected to be completed in 2027 while the Haixia project is due for 2026.

Corio Generation (alongside Japan’s JERA) was awarded 1.45 GW with the 732 MW Haiding-2 and the 720 MW Haiding-3 projects, expected for 2026.

Canada’s Northland Power won a bid for the 1.2 GW North-Wind (Beineng) project and the 602 MW Cangeng project. Taiwan’s Taiya Renewable Energy was awarded the 440 MW Huanyang wind project. Those final three projects should become operational in 2027.

At the end of 2021, offshore wind represented less than 1% of Taiwan’s installed capacity (with 237 MW), as the island only installed its first offshore wind turbine in 2017. Currently, Taiwan has nearly 3 GW of wind projects under construction and almost 14 GW under development.
