Taiwan awards 3 GW of offshore wind capacity in its latest auction

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has awarded 3 GW of offshore wind capacity across seven projects in the first round of its Phase 3 Zonal Development offshore wind auction. The allocated wind projects are located off the counties of Miaoli, Taichung and Changhua, on Taiwan’s western coast.

The 600 MW Haiding 2 project, developed by Corio Generation, and the 300 MW Haixia project, developed by Skyborn and Lealea Group, are expected to be commissioned in 2026. The other five projects are all due to begin commercial operations in 2027. They include Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners's 500 MW Fengmiao project, NPI's 500 MW Canwind project, SRE's 495 MW Formosa 4 project, the 440 MW Huanyang project (EDF, Taiya) and Skyborn's 165 MW Datian project.

At the end of 2021, offshore wind represented less than 1% of Taiwan’s installed capacity (with 237 MW), as the island only installed its first offshore wind turbine in 2017. Currently, Taiwan has nearly 3 GW of wind projects under construction and over 22 GW under development.
