The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (OFEN) has reassessed the costs related to the decommissioning of nuclear power plants, the post operative phase and radioactive waste management. The new estimation for the five Swiss nuclear power plants adjusted for inflation, at CHF20,654m (€17,150m), is 10% above the previous one (2006).
This amount is composed by:
- The costs of post-operative phase of the five Swiss nuclear power plants, amounting to CHF1,709m (€1,419m), which are funded directly by the operators and are therefore not covered by the fund.
- The costs of decommissioning and central interim storage Würenlingen (ZWILAG), which amount to CHF2,974m (€2,470m), and are fully covered by the decommissioning fund (CHF1,338m (€1,111m) accumulated in end-2011).
- The costs of radioactive waste management totals CHF15,970m (€13,261m), financed by operators (CHF7,523m (€6,247m), of which CHF5bn (€4.15bn) already provisioned in 2011) and the fund for waste management (CHF8,447m (€7,014m), of which CHF2,828m (€2,348m) accumulated in end 2011).
