The Swiss Federal Council has approved the country’s new target to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 65% in 2035 compared to their 1990 level, and by an average of 59% between 2031 and 2035. This objective was included in Switzerland’s second Nationally Determined Contribution that was subsequently submitted to the UNFCCC. Additionally, a supplement to the Long-Term Climate Strategy was adopted with an intermediate objective of lowering GHG emissions by at least 75% in 2040 compared to their 1990 level the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Hard-to-abate residual emissions of 13–14 MtCO2eq by 2050 are expected to be addressed through carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR), including 4 MtCO2eq in the industry sector and 3 MtCO2eq from waste incineration. Another 5 MtCO2eq originating from the agriculture sector and 1 to 2 MtCO2eq from international aviation are foreseen to be balanced by negative emissions.
In addition, the United Kingdom has also submitted its new NDC to the UNFCCC, pledging to reduce its GHG emissions by 81% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels excluding international aviation and shipping emissions.
