SSE's 840 MW Keadby-2 CCGT project construction moves forward (UK)

The Scottish power utility Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has selected Siemens for the construction of the 840 MW highly efficient gas-fired power station Keadby-2 in Lincolnshire (United Kingdom). Siemens will be in charge of providing a full turnkey solution for the project and will deploy a 50Hertz version of its SGT-9000HL gas turbine. In the meantime, SSE will dedicate £350m (€398m) to build the power plant, which is expected to have an efficiency rate of 63%.

This project is central for SSE, which currently has a capacity of 11.2 GW (March 2018), including 5.2 GW of gas- and oil-fired plants, 2 GW of coal and 3.8 GW of renewables (of which 1.4 GW of hydro and 2.3 GW of wind power). The group plans to invest £6bn (€6.9bn) over the next five years and generated 33.1 TWh (+26%), of which 23.7 TWh from thermal plants (+29%) and 9.4 TWh from renewables (+18%). SSE aims to reach over 4.2 GW of renewable capacity and to raise its renewable generation to 12 TWh/year by 2020. Besides, the company also committed to reducing its carbon intensity by 50% by 2020.
